REE – We’ve known the delightful New Zealand Captain Laurence Ottley of this 115’ Valdettaro (Italy) ketch REE, built in 1996 that’s always beautifully maintained for many years.  One of the reasons why REE gleams so much is because Larry has operated the vessel since 2013.  Before that he ran the classic yacht IRENE. So Larry is very much a “classic yacht captain,” just as capable refitting a yacht as he is captaining one, choosing the right crew with the right credentials and knowing service.  He said, “We run with six crew total; that’s the right number for ten guests.”  Well rounded, knowledgeable and personable, he showed me around the boat in Antigua in December, 2019.  Having just replaced the cap rail, the varnished toe rail that runs along the topside with teak, an enormous project, he said, “When we’re off charter, the yacht becomes a construction sight.”  But now the deck looked beautiful and how comfortable the vessel is at sea.  Two deck beds under a sailing awning run down the aft deck, leading into a covered pilot house, which offers so much space, there’s enough room for a dining table seating ten to fit to starboard and two coffee tables to fit to port.  All is finished in highly varnished teak, and the decks are natural teak – gorgeous!  Now with the vanished cap rail running around the deck, her look is complete. There is a varnished bar forward, ship’s wheel, music, and sunbathing forward.

A glass hatch leads below to the full beam, air conditioned saloon with sumptuous, thick pile carpets in white with lounge to port and dining table to starboard.  Chief stewardess Ivanya was competing in the tablescape competition when I went aboard.   While flowers are not the most original thing to decorate a table with, her dining table nevertheless was the. most. beautiful. .table scape I have ever seen, complete with a bright assortment of flowers, palms, and coconuts.  Truly memorable, I wish I had taken a photograph!  It caught my breath.  The varnished Honduran mahogany paneling in the saloon really shimmers.  “The saloon is where we watch movies,” Larry said.  “The crew pulls up cushions.  After a day of sailing from Antigua to Guadeloupe, it’s restful to watch a movie here.”

Ideal for families, the yacht sleeps ten guests in five staterooms, each cabin, except the master, having a Queen berth against the wall that converts to Twins. The master stateroom has a King bed, and the couch can pull out for a child.  Each stateroom is air conditioned and has personal entertainment system.

Careful always to take care of the environment and marine life, Larry says, “We’re still offering desalinated ship’s water in individual containers, but we also offer spring water from Montserrat too.  We serve it in 100% biodegradable plastic bottles.”  When asked where the yacht would be going for summer, Larry told me, “We’re going to New England for summer 2020 for charter.  While we love Barcelona (Spain), we will go as far north as Maine, and we enjoy the Elizabeth Islands, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket too.”

The yacht charters for $52,000 weekly + 30% APA in the Caribbean; $54,000 weekly in New England, and $68,250 weekly for Christmas and New Year.
